WERC Warehouse Assessment and Certification/Re-
Certification Program Audit Process

The two-day WERC Warehouse Assessment and Certification (or Re-Certification, for facilities that completed a previous assessment three years prior) includes the following steps.

Prior to the Auditor’s On-Site Visit

  1. Applicant reviews the Program Guidelines, then prepares and submits the Warehouse Assessment and Certification Program Application and Licensing Agreement

  2. WERC receives the Warehouse Assessment and Certification Program Application and assigns auditor.

  3. Auditor contacts applicant, completes pre-audit questionnaire and sets dates for site visit.

During the Two-Day, On-Site Visit

  1. Day 1: Auditor conducts a complete walk-through of the facility reviewing processes activities, and conducts interviews with selected facility team members.

  2. Day 2 Morning: The applicant is informed if their facility received the certification. The Auditor presents the Findings Report and conducts an on-site, comprehensive review of the findings in an interactive session with the facility team. During this session, the Auditor answers any questions about the process, grading or comments surrounding their report.

  3. Day 2 Afternoon: The Auditor conducts a Process Improvement Workshop explaining the fundamentals of a solid benchmarking and process improvement program. Then the auditor facilitates a workshop to review and rate opportunities discovered during the audit. A detailed description of all major opportunities, plus a summary of the benefits and risks will be developed. A list of high-level (departmental) responsibilities for developing documents that can be used to define the opportunities to management and to seek funding and needed resources is also created. The day closes with the expectation that the team is well prepared to go forward.

  4. Facilities receiving Certification will be offered a licensing agreement to begin using the Certification logo within the licensed guidelines. The facility will also receive a plaque acknowledging their Certification.

After the On-Site Visit

  1. A post-audit evaluation is provided to the applicant for feedback and suggested areas of improvement within the WERC Warehouse Assessment and Certification Program process.

  2. If Certification is not awarded, the applicant warehouse may send written notice of any objections to the Auditor's Assessment Report to WERC within 30 days of audit completion. The notice will be reviewed by WERC's Assessment and Certification Program Committee, which may either:
    1. Issue its agreement with the Auditor's Assessment Report, or
    2. Order a new audit to be completed at the applicant's expense (at a reduced re-examination rate).

Within 30 days of the decision or additional audit, WERC will notify the applicant as to its final determination of the review and whether or not Certification has been awarded.

WERC Warehouse Re-Certification Program Audit Process

  1. A WERC Warehouse Certification is valid for three years from the date the audit was performed. When the anniversary date approaches, WERC will contact the individual responsible for that site and discuss the re-certification process.

  2. Re-certification audits cover all the areas of the operation in the same manner used during the initial audit, including an evaluation and interviews on Day 1, and a comprehensive review of all findings with the team on Day 2.

  3. Additionally, a GAP Chart that shows the level of improvement over the three-year period will be prepared.

  4. If specific process improvement projects have been undertaken since the completion of the previous audit, the auditor can—upon request—include an opinion regarding the effectiveness of the actions taken.

  5. Facilities receiving re-certification will be offered a licensing agreement to continue using the WERC Warehouse Certification logo within the licensed guidelines. The facility will also receive another plaque acknowledging their subsequent Certification.
